On Sunday 2nd June I removed and then reloaded Thunderbird, which ceased to function the previous day.. Now I can't send but can receive e mails, and it has lost my entire e mail address list. I need this list to be restored asap, please, so I need advice.

It depends on how much you removed. If you left the old profile, the addressbook is still there. The names will be abook.sqlite and history.sqlite. All profiles (assuming you use Windows) are at c:\users\<yourid>\appdata\roaming\thunderbird\profiles. Once you locate it, you can import at tools>import>import a file>import addressbook>sqlite database
