Recent versions of firefox for android are no longer offering to save Basic auth passwords - how can I save them?

Something has changed in recent versions of firefox for andriod (roughly since the address bar moved to the bottom), and I can no longer figure out how I can save passwords for sites with Basic auth authentication. I've looked into the back end of one of these sites and it is using basic auth implemented by HAProxy. This always used to work and the same site can have its credentials saved in other browsers.

How can I save my credentials, please?

For Android there's a new Firefox Lockwise app that is used to save logins and passwords. The reason that the developers changed to a stand-alone password app is that it can be now be used to fill in saved passwords on other apps as well, not just in Firefox.
