why do I keep getting "Windows cannot find..." and "Firefox is already running.." that I have to close when nothing is already running?

When going from say, e-mail to google, but having closed the e-mail program, I get two dialogue boxes. One says "Windows cannot find (whatever program I am trying to open), and the other says "Firefox is already running, please close.....". I have to hit OK on both, and then I try to open google again, and it proceeds to open without any interuption. I do not have any "Firefox" open when I try either the first time, or the second. I eventually get where I want to be, but it is annoying as hell, since there is nothing wrong with the path that my shorcut is trying to open, and I don't already have Firefox open!

when you are again in this "Firefox is already running, please close ..." situation, have the task monitor open and look at the list of programs running. I am pretty much certain, you will find firefox among them. Note that when you close Firefox, the window disappears but the application still does some houskeeping before stopping for good. Clicking during this time on Firefox ellicit the "Firefox is still running ..." message.

I will check the task monitor next time, but what you say about "still doing some housekeeping" sounds exactly like what it seems to be doing - it is like it hasn't let go of the last session yet, even though I closed it. ...and because of that, I am not sure I can be fast enough for Task Manager to show anything open. (It is especially annoying because it makes me think it is spending my time capturing my usage patterns, etc. for its own benefit, and hanging me up in the process!) Can't Firefox change something so that when I quit, it quits! If it didn't capture everything it was after, too bad, get it next time around. By the way, thanks for the prompt response, and I am not ranting at you.

Make sure that you do not start Firefox with the -no-remote switch or have set the environment variable MOZ_NO_REMOTE=1 (Control Panel > System > Advanced > Environment variables).
