no matter what I do, I cannot update from 3.?.? to 8.?.? I've tried everything suggested but it will NOT update now I cannot open many new websites

Are you really running 3.6.3? You should update to 3.6.24 ASAP - http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all-older.html

Your user agent string may just be set incorrectly. See below


  • Type about:config in the URL bar and hit Enter
  • If you see the warning, you can confirm that you want to access that page.
  • Filter = general.useragent.
  • Right-click the preferences that are bold, one line at a time, and select Reset.
  • Then restart Firefox
