Is this continuous beeping, or only when you press a key? Are you using an add-on to search the webpage, or just the search built into the browser?

A single beep (with each key press) would be normal when what you want is not found. If you hear the beep, stop searching

Unfortunately, that's what I was afraid of. I was hoping there'd be a setting to shut that off, but apparently not yet. Maybe they'll add a setting for that. Having the text box turn red is enough.

No, I checked and I don't have sticky keys enabled. Thanks for the suggestion. The beep on ubuntu can be shut off entirely by blacklisting the speaker beep function, but a) that stopped working with the upgrade to 18 and b) turning the beep off on an application-by-application basis gives more fine grained control
