I recently lost all of my opened tabs and windows. I had 7 pages open with multiple tabs in each window. Windows did an update and shut down my computer without me realizing. When I went on to my computer, without thinking I opened a new window and didn't restore the session, not realizing it wasn't there anymore. Then my computer shut down unexpectedly. Now when I go on the computer, it won't show my previous browsing session. The restore previous session is grayed out, and now that I opened another window to try to figure it out, there is nothing to restore. Is there any way to get a browsing session back from the past? Not the most previous browsing session, but a browsing session from 2 before that??? I am devastated because of all the research I've done in the past 6 months is gone. It will be so hard to figure it all out by searching through my history since it was 6 months of browsing. Not to mention too time consuming to do it that way since there were a few hundred tabs that I lost! Please help me!! I keep thinking that there has to be a way...It's really stressing me out and I just can't accept that it is all gone! I'm not an expert on computers, so I hope to get an explanation that I understand...I would be so grateful if someone can help me!! Thanks!!

Hello,

The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information.
Note: This will cause you to lose any Extensions and some Preferences.

  • Open websites will not be saved in Firefox versions lower than 25.

To Reset Firefox do the following:

  1. Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
  2. Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
  3. Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
  4. Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.

Further information can be found in the Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings article.

Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!

Thank you.

You can try to restore a previous version of the sessionstore.js file.

You can use this button to go to the Firefox profile folder:

Hi AjayJogawath, I tried it and it pulled up my most previous browsing session, but not the one I needed. Thank you for your advice on trying to help me. I would like to reverse what I just did now since it didn't work though, because I don't like how my firefox page looks now. How do I reverse what I just did per your instructions?? I appreciate it, thank you!

When you reset Firefox then a new profile is created and some personal data (bookmarks, history, cookies, passwords, form data) is automatically imported and the current profile folder will be moved to the desktop to an "Old Firefox Data" folder.
Installed extensions and other customizations (toolbars, prefs) that you have made are lost and need to be redone.

It is possible to recover more data from the old profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over the problem.

Do you know how to reverse resetting the firefox browser? I reset it and since it didn't resolve my problem, I would like to get my "new" firefox back. I haven't tried your instructions yet because I don't know where to click on properties! This whole thing happened in the first place because of windows shutting my computer down automatically after doing updates, and later my breaker blew causing the power to go out, so there shouldn't be any corruption on any files to my knowledge. Thanks so much for your imput. I hope to try it soon!

Can someone please give me an answer to my question about reversing resetting the firefox browser?? Thanks you guys...I would greatly appreciate it. I wish I understood more when it comes to computers so I wouldn't feel so lost even with your instruction. I'm thinking that I just have to take the loss on my tabs and windows that I lost, but would greatly appreciate being able to at least undo what I did with resetting the browser to get it back to normal again. The way things look now, even in my emails, look old school to me, like an older version and I don't prefer this since it didn't fix my problem. Thank you in advance for your help in resolving this...

You can copy the sessionstore.js file in the "Old Firefox Data" folder on the desktop shortcut to restore the tabs and windows from that saved profile. If there is more than one profile then check the file dates.

It is possible to recover more data from the old profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over the problem.

Note that you may have to check "History > Recently Closed Tabs/Windows" if some tabs or windows are missing.
