Have you checked your extensions lately? I suggest disabling ALL nonessential, recently installed, and/or unrecognized extensions here:

orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons > Extensions category

After restarting Firefox, do you notice any improvement?

DO NOT EVER update any of your software EXCEPT at the web site that created the program. For example, if you want to check a Mozilla program, go to Mozilla. Check a Microsoft program, go to Microsoft. Want to check a plugin, go to that plugin's site. While most warnings you may get are likely to be real, there are web pages that may try to send you a virus by telling you its an update.
