What is the procedure for upgrading Thunderbird ESR 17.0.7 to 31.6 (latest mainstream release) on Mac OSX 10.10.2?

Is it as simple as installing the new version and then launching it to see all local folders and my email and its folders from my company's IMAP just like before upgrading?

Thanks

Chosen solution

Create a full backup of your Thunderbird profile folder. Uninstall the old ESR version. Download the latest version from https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/all.html and install it.

Check for updates via Help - About Thunderbird, and let it update automatically until you're at v31.6.0. Creating a backup of your profile folder prior to start updating is recommended.

Unfortunately that won't work if you are on the ESR updates channel since it states I'm on the latest version with 17.0.7 which was the last version of thunderbird in the ESR channel. Hence the request to migrate to the mainstream release.

Thunderbird 24.0 and 31.0 are essentially on Release channel even though they are still being Released in ESR fashion.

This worked. However, it would be great if this was documented and I didn't have to rely on a discussion forum for a task that has the potential to wipe out my data even with a backup. Just saying - less worry for users means, happier users
