lets say I open a word.doc file.

Its filename is "file folder one.doc"

Firefox makes it "file+folder+one.doc"

it is very annoying - just started showing up and I cannot figure out how to turn off.

Please make it stop!!!

You are opening a DOC file from disk into Firefox?

Do you see the spaces in the file name replaced with + characters in the address bar or somewhere else?

No, it is occurring within my aol email account. When I open a file (microsoft, adobe) it puts in a + wherever there was a space.

I see the change in the dialog box when ask to open or save. Once opened, I have to remove all the +'s

I can't test with AOL. When I test with my work email account, Firefox doesn't change the spaces to + symbols. This could mean there is something special about AOL. If you try the AOL site in other web browsers such as Internet Explorer, do they show spaces instead of + signs?

You can try to check the HTTP response headers with the Live Http Headers extension.
