Firefox should not lose data and bookmarks etc., but to be safe backup your Firefox profile and put it some where safe, your documents folder or the desktop are fine.

I have an XP and that updated ok. You may have security software interfering. Try installing the latest version using the full installer. That will be Fx45 now.

No need to delete or uninstall anything. Just install Fx45 over the top of your Fx42. Certainly do not use any third party un-installer.

Actually since you have Windows XP you will get served 43.0.1 on mozilla.org as 43.0.2 and newer Firefox setups for Windows are signed now. You can then update to current Release from 43.0.1.

If you have WinXP SP3 and not SP2 then you can pick your language and download Firefox 45.0 from https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/45.0/win32/
