I was prompted to update Firefox to version 17 & since I did I can no longer access the internet via firefox and skype along with other programs will not load either. how do I get 16 back so I can continue to use my pc

Are you sure that firefox is the problem? If you can not use skype and other program maybe it's something else.

A possible cause is security software (firewall,anti-virus) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.

Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.
