You can drag the Bookmarks sidebar item on a toolbar (Navigation Toolbar) via View > Toolbars > Customize
That button is a toggle, so you can open and close the sidebar with a left click on that button.
If the sidebar is ope then you can click the close X of the sidebar to close it.
Firefox doesn't close the sidebar after you have selected a bookmark (link), you can do that via the Bookmarks menu or the Bookmarks Toolbar.
