Every time I try to go to a .onion site I get a message saying "you are trying to reach an onion/hidden service. To access (site) via web you will have to use the tor browser" but I am on tor browser.

This does not sound like an issue with Firefox for Android but is something that the Tor support team should be able to help you with.
