Upgrade to 91 not complete
I am using Linux Mint. The upgrade appeared to go well enough except it did not replace the v78 icon in the start menu with the v91. I tried re-installing the upgrade - no help, so I went into terminal and uninstalled Thunderbird hoping to get a fresh install instead of an upgrade. I went to the extracted folder and ran Thunderbird again, and, lo and behold, it started v91 without doing any install. So now I have a working and customized v91 without any startup icons anywhere that I can find.
So where is TB installed that I didn't delete it? How do I create an icon in the menu? I copied the executable from the extracted folder to the desktop, so I am working, but it is a klutz.

Solution choisie
1) Uninstall Thunderbird 78: sudo apt uninstall thunderbird. 2) Download and unpack the Thunderbird compressed file, this should give you a thunderbird folder. 3) Move this folder to /opt eg: sudo mv thunderbird /opt
To create a launcher icon - this is for the Cinnamon environment:
1) Right click on the LM 'start' button 2) Select Configure 3) Select 'Menu' at the top of the window 4) Select 'Open the menu editor' 5) Select 'Internet' in the left pane 6) Click 'New Item' 7) Name: Thunderbird 8) Go browse for /opt/thunderbird/thunderbird and select it 9) Click the rocket icon 10) Select 'Applications' and wait for the icon cache to build 11) Find and select the desired Thunderbird icon 12) Click OK to close the launcher window.
You should now have a Thunderbird icon in the Internet menu.

Thunderbird will run on linux without using the installer... but it will also not save and changes you make.
I would guess that you icon issue is in the cache of your windowing environment and has probably nothing to do with Thunderbird.

I have no idea what this means. I think the installer is what I am running from the download. I thought I installed it from the installer, but I never got icons in the menu system that would start v91.. only v78. So did it install or not?

I am not sure what this means either nor do I know where to look for the cache of my windowing environment. All I want is to get a working icon for v91 in the start menu. If it is necessary to totally uninstall TB and start over, I can do that. Just lay out the steps.

After thinking about it overnight, I think I have not installed TB. How do you install v91 after you download it? I don't find any instructions (Surprisingly) on the download page.

appears to show me how to run the new Thunderbird from the home directory using the only executable I found after extracting the download. I have already done that from my Download directory. This does not install any startup icon in the start menu. In other words, running that executable does not appear to actually install anything.
What am I missing?

Thank you Nigel for posting the answer. You would think they would just create a .deb file which would install the new upgrade with one click. Maybe someday.

If you want a deb file, look in the distribution repository.
