Firefox currently preloads the 'Top Sites' pinned on the home screen and shows a screenshot of each pre-loaded site as icon. I want to stop Firefox from pre-loading those sites and ideally replace them with an icon of my choosing.

NOTE: I do NOT want to remove the 'Top Sites', I merely want to stop them from pre-loading.

You can replace them with an icon by clicking the "3 dot button" (which shows when you hover to the icon) and click "Edit". Now you click "Use a custom image" and enter the image url.

Firefox will store those icon cache inside "thumbnails" folder in your profile. You can replace those generated icons with an 0kb png file so it will show completely white. (idk but my firefox sometimes generates them its pretty annoying)(set "gfx.downloadable_fonts.disable_cache" to true if you encountered issue for loading icons)

Idk if this helps

Try to set browser.newtab.preload = false on the about:config page.

That sounds like it should work, but sadly it doesn't. 'Top Sites' icons will still be populated with newly created screenshots of the sites they're linking to.
