how do you make firefox open history items in new tab?

I'm used to Chrome's ability to automatically open a history item I click on in a new tab. Firefox instead opens that history item in the tab I'm currently in, which is really inconvenient. I don't want to have to remember to open a new tab BEFORE I look in history for a specific item. I can't find any way to do this in Firefox - it may be there, but not to my eyes.

Sorry, I think the only way is through the right-click (or on a one-button mouse, Ctrl+click) context menu like a link or bookmark. And if you don't want to alter the current date on the history entry to the new one, you have to choose Open Link in New Private Window.

Maybe another support forum volunteer has a better trick.

I should mention that there are some add-ons to list your history in a tab that may be inspired by Chrome, so if you can't get used to the Library window or History sidebar, you could take a look at these (came up in a search and have pretty good reviews, but I don't use them myself):

thanks! but this is a laptop (MBA) and I'm using the track pad - option-tap or control-tap don't work to open a new tab - and besides that would just make me have to remember to do that and it's not something I have the brain to do when I'm in the middle of work stuff. Chrome makes it so easy - I've gone back and forth between Chrome and FF for years and keep going back to Chrome because it's just so much more convenient and intuitive, and I can't see why FF can't do the same. But I hate Google! And Safari is not so great - gave up on it years ago. I wonder if it got any better...
