When I move read emails to folders they often disappear. They have also disappeared from my google online email. This didn't happen before I installed Thunderbird. I'm using Version 60.6.1, Windows 10. They are not in other folders including drafts, junk, and all mail. Some of these files are very important business files. If the problem is not resolved I'll have to discontinue using T Bird.

What type of account have got setup in Thunderbird? Is it pop or imap?

re :When I move read emails to folders they often disappear Are you moving those emails into other imap folders in the same imap gmail mail account or moving them to folders in 'Local Folders' mail account or moving them from Inbox to other folders in a pop gmail account?

While in Thunderbird, I am moving files to imap folders.

When emails disappear from the webmail 'All Mail' folder, they are being deleted. If you were to 'move' an email from an imap folder into a 'Local Folders' mail account folder then it is being moved off the server and so would be deleted from the 'All Mail' folder.

So I'm wondering if some of your imap folders are actually synchronising with server. It is as if when you move an email to another imap folder in the same gmail account, that folder is not being perceived as existing.

Are all the imap folders in your Thunderbird imap account also visible if you logon to your webmail account? Please check the webmail settings to make sure all folders are selected to be viewed in Imap.

Is there a particular folder or folders you move emails into that is not showing those emails? Are these problem folders always subfolders? Please tell me the names of those folders.

When you 'move' files, are you using drag and drop or right click and select move to specific folder or you tried both and still a problem.

Do you download full copies to all your imap folders or only some of them or none ? You can check this setting:

  • Right click on imap mail account name in Folder Pane and select 'Settings'
  • Select : 'synchronisation & storage'

Mesasge Synchronising:

  • Is this selected? 'Keep messages in all folders for this account on this computer'
  • Click on 'Advanced' button

Are all your folders listed? Are they all selected to download or none or some?

Is there a correlation between folders not selected for full download and those folders that you move emails into and they disappear?

What Anti-Virus product do you use ?

Test: Suggest you see if those imap folders need to be subscribed again.

  • Right click on imap mail account name in Folder Pane and select 'Subscribe'
  • click on 'Refresh'
  • select/highlight all of the folders
  • click on 'Subscribe'
  • click on 'OK'

Restart Thunderbird.

Create an email for testing and save to 'Drafts' - can you see it in 'Drafts? Send the email to your gmail account does it appear in 'Sent Mail' ? Does it appear in 'Inbox' ? Please test moving that email into a folder known to have an issue, does it appear in folder?
