How can I go to an existing tab instead of opening a new one when clicking on a link on an external application?

This is a feature that works quite well on Safari and I am wondering if there's a way to replicate on Firefox.

During my day I click on links on an external email application hundreds of times a day. About 50% of the time, the link I am clicking on is already open in Firefox. However, instead of just showing me the tab with the link already open (like Safari would do), Firefox opens a brand new tab. As a result, every few hours I have dozens of tab open with multiple repeated URLs.

Is there a way to have Firefox just take me to an open tab when I click on that URL in an external application?
