Suddenly the inbox is permanently in bold and has (*599) - say- apparent messages. This does change when a new message come in to *600 and once read goes back,. But there are not that number of messages in the folder let alone unread ones. It just started a few days ago. And why the star*?

Solution choisie

The star means the number shown is a summation of the folder, including the contents of all its subfolders.

I find this so frustrating. The * means a reply to existing conversations. So, *599 means some of those messages are responses to ongoing conversations. The conversations which have received a response are underlined so you have to open each underlined conversation to see what the response is. So now, the entire conversation is opened when you click on the underlined message. Much better the previous way when all incoming message were listed in bold font in order received regardless if they are part of an existing conversation or not.
