Firefox (fx6 & fx7) freezes on all platforms

  1. This is a problem affecting a minority of users. But still enough to get 600+ votes in a single sumo thread, note there is now a bug686025 and a workaround a involving an add-on https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/places-maintenance/

  3. Don't link directly to the add-on without the detailed explanation, please. Link to the blog post. There are lots of fiddly bits in the add-on and it's not exactly well-documented.

I've asked MaK to write a new extension that just fixes this.

  4. There's already a solution that clears the browsing history in the Firefox hangs or is not responding - How to fix article about these periodic hangs.

There's already a [[Firefox hangs#w_periodic-hangs|solution that clears the browsing history]] in the [[Firefox hangs]] article about these periodic hangs.
  5. I suspect the problem is a lot more specific than an ordinary hang, (edit these are periodic but repetitive hangs) there is now additional developer comment which I will reproduce in full:

Hi, everyone! Based on your reports we've been able to reproduce the symptoms that many people have been reporting in this question and others like this. The main symptom in question is that Firefox freezes for anywhere from 20 seconds to 2 minutes every 10 minutes, while utilizing the CPU at 100%.
We don't yet have a fix in our Aurora or Beta channels to test, but we do have a work-around that people can attempt to try to see if they are having the same problem that we've found.
We'd love it if people could try this out and report if it worked for them, or if it didn't. One of our developers, Marco, has posted an extension with instructions on the right options to choose: http://blog.bonardo.net/2011/09/30/is-your-firefor-freezing-at-regular-intervals I suffered from this periodic hang and when I ran this on my profile, my Firefox hung for a couple minutes, so please let it complete - it takes some time.
I know that there will be people who have commented on this question for which this will not solve their problems. We've found one serious hang here and are working on reproducing others as well.
    Thanks!

P.S. the thread linked in my previous post above

  6. I note that a few users and threads also mention freezes or; problems with loading images etc and some are finding a solution is reducing the preference network.http.max-connections I think it was mentioned the value increased with firefox 6 from maybe 30-48 to 256

That also sounds like the sort of preference that some users may be tweaking anyhow

  7. Yeah i have seen a lot of users who had problems loading pages (webpages keep loading forever but the page doesn't actually show up). Just a few of them resolved it by Clearing Cookies & Cache and using the suggestions of Firefox can't load websites but other browsers can article. But almost all of them still had problems so they started tweaking the network.http.max-connections preference. And now the majority of them don't have problems loading webpages.

Websites show a spinning wheel and never finish loading addresses this problem and needs review.

  12. I think that some solutions (IPv6, DNS Prefetching, clear cookies and cache) in Firefox can't load websites but other browsers can (Server not found or Unable to connect error message at the end) should be moved in Websites show a spinning wheel and never finish loading (no error message).

Can someone comment in their related threads?

  14. I note in one bug the problem being investigated Increase in network.http.max-connections appears to cause hang, requires browser restart and they are trying to recruit users who see this problem to test the hypothesis that it is a problem with routers resetting. 692260#c28 has a link to a proposed testpage that will consistently open 240 connections. (I do not see the hangs myself, but the test page times out when I try it)

(I would also surmise not only routers but maybe some ISPs could have problems) Test page is http://www.ducksong.com/mozilla/692260/index.html

  16. Firefox 6 also has this increased network.http.max-connections st to 256, so I'm curious why we now suddenly see such a rise in Firefox 7 that seems to be caused by this increased value. We also see a mention in the bug report of high memory usage that probably is the cause of the reported crashes. Such a behavior would indicate a profile problem like extensions or other security or anti-virus software or malware.

  17. The bug seems to be settling on a possible fix relating to Windows OS, but maybe are looking for volunteers to test these.

    Update
Fixed on firefox 8 & 9 by reducing number of connections on Windows and interesting to note automated monitoring may be introduced Bug 429592 - catch process hangs
