Blocking access to the file protocol is on the to-do list. As far as I know, it's still not something that's been added to Firefox just yet.

Mike Kaply, one of the many people working on Firefox, does have something that can help (at least I think it still works properly): https://github.com/mkaply/fileblock

It's a little less user-friendly than a setting actually in Firefox, but that should be coming at some point in the future.
