if i go to a website page i've visited at an earlier date, and then at a later date either google search for the site or go to bookmarked page for the site, i get a page i visited on a prior date.

Hi,

I think Firefox would never show a stale page unless a site fails to inform the browser of content changes or modification. You can make sure by pressing Ctrl + F5, which makes Firefox ignore the cache and fetch content afresh. You can also make sure by visiting news.yahoo.com or news.google.com etc. between some minutes.
