Even though I upgraded through ver 4 and now ver 5 the icon in question has not changed. How can I update this?. I also thought I saw some reference to XP losing support in later versions. Is this correct?

You are showing Fx5. You could check at Help>About Firefox.

My memory is that the desktop icon doesn't change. You could Right click>Properties and change the name to Firefox 5.
