Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

  • Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

may you've installed the extension Zynga Community Toolbar 3.3.3.2 or a similar toolbar? if so, then try to deactivate it first, restart FF and check if the problem persists.

This worked. It turned out the the problem was the AVG Security Toolbar 6.103.018.001.
