I have an account on the following website: http://forums.wheresgeorge.com/forum.php

I rarely can get it to function normally on my laptop when using firefox. Usually a white page comes up with a list of threads, rather than the usual forum interface, and then if I try to navigate further, I get a 404 error message. I saw a suggestion somewhere to look at the web console information but I don't know enough about the types of information presented there to interpret it. If anyone can assist, I would be delighted. I copy/pasted the stuff I saw when I pulled up the web console.

Many site issues can be caused by corrupt cookies or cache.

Warning ! ! This will log you out of sites you're logged in to. You may also lose any settings for that website.

If there is still a problem, Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link} by holding down the <Shift> (Mac=Options) key, and then starting Firefox.

A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh). Did this help?

While you are in safe mode;

Try disabling graphics hardware acceleration in Firefox. Since this feature was added to Firefox it has gradually improved but there are still a few glitches.

There is security software like Avast, Kaspersky, BitDefender and ESET that intercept secure connection certificates and send their own.

This seems to happen if you use the HTTPS protocol. The website only seems to work properly if you use the HTTP protocol. If you use an extension that force a secure connection then create a block exception for this website.

You can also check dom.security.https_only_mode on the about:config page and make sure it is false.

  • dom.security.https_only_mode = false

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I accept the risk!" to continue.

I tried the suggestions about hardware acceleration and https, and observed during my testing that they seem to help if I was using the normal browser but not while I was using a private window, which is what I ordinarily use from day to day. Is anyone aware of any reason this might be the case, for the benefit of anyone reading this who prefers to use private windows?

more options

This is probably only about the protocol that you use and Private Browsing mode shouldn't matter.

If you get this error, is the HTTPS protocol used ?

Does it work for you if you use the HTTP protocol and possibly modify the protocol from https:// to http:// ?

more options

No, https is not being used. I checked to ensure my https extension is disabled for it and it is defaulting to http for that site.

You can try these steps in case of issues with web pages:

You can reload web page(s) and bypass the cache to refresh possibly outdated or corrupted files.

  • hold down the Shift key and left-click the Reload button
  • press "Ctrl + F5" or press "Ctrl + Shift + R" (Windows,Linux)
  • press "Command + Shift + R" (Mac)

Clear the Cache and remove the Cookies for websites that cause problems via the "3-bar" Firefox menu button (Options/Preferences).

"Remove the Cookies" for websites that cause problems:

  • Options/Preferences -> Privacy & Security
    Cookies and Site Data: "Manage Data"

"Clear the Cache":

  • Options/Preferences -> Privacy & Security
    Cookies and Site Data -> Clear Data -> Cached Web Content: Clear

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration or userChrome.css is causing the problem.

  • switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Themes
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window
