When moving mail from one folder to another, why does Thunderbird open the destination folder instead of returning to the source folder? (win8.1)

I move incoming and sent mail that i want to keep into various folders. When I drag and drop item(s) into the chosen destination folder, that folder opens and I have to re-select the source folder in order to continue moving further items. This very frustrating if I have a lot of items to move. Is there a way to stop the destination folder opening each time?

My first instinct is to say it's a mouse hardware or mouse driver problem, because it sounds like releasing the mouse button is causing a click action.

Trying two other different mouses (mice?) no instances of the problem have since occurred. Thanks Wayne for your swift response. It looks as though you have hit the nail on the head!
