I would like to create an "Mark As Read" and "Mark as Unread" toolbar button.

What exactly does the "create new toolbar" do at the bottom of the View-Toolbars-Customize screen. Couldn't find anything in help.

Just right-click the Mail or Menu Toolbar, Customize..., and drag the Mark button onto the Mail Toolbar.

That solved the first part of the problem almost. It will do for now. Would still like 2 separate buttons for read and unread if possible.

Second part of of question not answered.

Toolbar Buttons doesn't offer separate Mark as Read/Unread buttons, and I'm not aware of any simple way to achieve this.

"Create new toolbar" lets you add additional toolbars under Mail Toolbar in case you want extra buttons that don't fit on Mail Toolbar.
