Firefox update does not work properly on Mac & is not saving anything - no restore, no history. All toolbars are gone.

Updated Firefox 38.0.5 on Mac computer and now does not save ANYTHING! Anytime you close nothing is saved. Toolbar gone. No history. Can no longer restore as it goes back to the original page. I uninstalled Firefox and re-installed and it still is doing the same thing. It lost everything that I have saved and now I can't even start from scratch because it doesn't save. It is working fine on two other Macs. Ironically, the same thing has happened to the Windows computer as well. Help!

Did Firefox perform a "Refresh" on either system? The telltale sign is an Old Firefox Data folder on the desktop, and inside, a freshly updated semi-randomly-named folder. If you see anything like that, the folder could be used for some data recovery down the road.

Could you check to make sure Firefox is not set to run in automatic private browsing mode? This would be set in the Options page:

  • "3-bar" menu button > Preferences / Options > Privacy

If the page says "Firefox will: Never remember history" change that to "Firefox will: Use custom settings for history" and uncheck the box to "Always use private browsing mode".

If that's not the culprit, do you have any add-ons or external programs that "clean up" browser settings and might be undoing changes? One that sometimes causes issues is Advanced SystemCare.
