How do I display icons and text on the bookmarks toolbar. If I roll over the icon I can see the text. I want the icon and the text to always be visible.

Previously the name of the icon link as well as the icon was visible on the bookmarks toolbar. I did something to cause the name to disappear and can't figure out how to get it back. The only visible, unless I move the cursor over the icon, is the icon itself.

Hmm, I can't think of a built-in way to only show icons. Is it possible that one of your Add-ons has changed the display style? Do you have "Roomy Bookmarks Toolbar"?

You can review your extensions on the Add-ons page, and when they have an Options button, modify their behavior. Or Disable them. I suggest starting your investigation with those:

Open the Add-ons page using either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Extensions. Anything seem relevant to the Bookmarks Toolbar?

Just a little bit of information.

If you right click on the icon and go to properties, you should see the name of the bookmark and you can abbreviate the name to any extent right down to nothing. I do this with many icons I'm familiar with; a great space saver. This doesn't solve your immediate problem but it would be interesting to see just what "Properties" is showing. I know this isn't a great help but, on hovering, my icons show any name abbreviated or not plus the full website link. The icons where I've deleted the name still show the full website on hovering.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

In Firefox Safe mode these changes are effective:

  • all extensions are disabled (about:addons)
  • default theme is used (no persona)
  • userChrome.css and userContent.css are ignored (chrome folder)
  • default toolbar layout is used (localstore-safe.rdf file)
  • JavaScript JIT compilers are disabled (about:config page: javascript.options.*jit)
  • hardware acceleration is disabled (Options > Advanced > General)
  • plugins are not affected
  • preferences are not affected

This might work but it's more complicated than I want to deal with unless I was absolutely desperate. It's a bit over my head. But thank you.
