A theme is a type of Firefox add-on that changes the visual appearance of Firefox. This article describes how to find, install and manage themes in Firefox.

What are themes?

A theme changes the appearance of Firefox, such as the color scheme and background image of the toolbars.

Firefox comes with a Defaultdefault System theme and optional Light and DarkLight, Dark and Alpenglow themes, and offers optional Colorways themes for a limited period of time, but you can always install new themes.

Note: All themes are lightweight (background) themes. Complete themes are no longer supported. See Built-in themes in Firefox - alternative to complete themes.

Installing themes

  1. Click the menu button Fx89menuButton, click Add-ons and themes and select Recommendations or Themes.
  2. Scroll through the suggested themes or visit addons.mozilla.org to browse more themes.
  3. Click on the theme's author to see more information about it.
  4. Click the + Install Theme button.

Remove themes

Note: You cannot remove themes that come with Firefox (DefaultSystem, Light, DarkLight, Dark, Alpenglow, or Colorways themes) but you can disable them by switching themes or resetting the default theme (see above).

To remove an installed theme that you previously added to Firefox:

  1. Click the menu button Fx89menuButton, click Add-ons and themes and select Themes.
  2. Click the ellipsis (3-dot) icon that displays for the theme that you want to remove and then select Remove.

Note: If you remove the Enabled theme, the Defaultdefault System theme will become enabled.

If you are not able to remove a theme, see Cannot remove an add-on (extension or theme).
