Customize your New Tab page to hide or display content

You can personalize your New Tab page to show the search box, shortcuts to your most visited sites, recommended stories, pages you've visited or bookmarked recently, or nothing at all. This article will show you how to change this content.

Change your New Tab page content

  1. In the Menu bar at the top of the screen, click Firefox and then select Preferences or Settings, depending on your macOS version.Click the menu button Fx89menuButton and select Settings.
  2. Select the Home panel.
  3. Under Firefox Home Content, put a checkmark next to the sections you want to see on your New Tab page. Some sections will let you choose the number of rows you want to see on your New Tab page:
    • Web Search: turns the search box on or off on the New Tab page.
    • Top Sites: shows your most visited sites. (Use the drop-down menu to indicate how many rows of Top Sites you want to view).
    • Recommended by Pocket (U.S., Canada, U.K. and Germany only) to see stories that are popular among Pocket users.
      • Sponsored Stories to see the occasional sponsored article. These will be clearly marked if you choose to turn this on. See Sponsored Stories (Pocket site).
    • Highlights to see pages you've visited or bookmarked recently.
      • Visited Pages
      • Bookmarks
      • Most Recent Download
      • Pages Saved to Pocket
    • Snippets to see content from Mozilla. See Snippets in Firefox FAQ.
Tip: You can also change your Firefox Home Content by clicking the cogwheel Fx88NewTabCogwheel icon at the top right corner of the New Tab page.

Blank New Tab page

If you prefer a blank page when you open a new tab:

  1. In the Menu bar at the top of the screen, click Firefox and then select Preferences or Settings, depending on your macOS version.Click the menu button Fx89menuButton and select Settings.
  2. Select the Home panel.
  3. Under New Windows and Tabs, select Blank Page from the New tabs drop-down menu.

If you prefer a blank page as your home page and when opening new windows, follow the above steps and select Blank Page from the Homepage and new windows drop-down menu. See How to set the home page for more information.

  1. On the new tab page, click the Personalize button on the top right.

    • A panel will open with content you can customize.

  2. Click the toggle next to a section to switch it on Fx89Personalize-ToggleOn or off Fx89Personalize-ToggleOff to show or hide that section.
  • Shortcuts: shows your most visited sites. (Use the drop-down menu to indicate how many rows of Shortcuts you want to view).
    • Sponsored shortcuts to see the occasional sponsored site. Select or deselect the checkbox to include sponsored content. To learn more, see this article.

  • Recent activity to see pages you've visited or bookmarked recently

Tip: Here's another way to access your Firefox Home settings panel:

Blank New Tab page

  1. On the new tab page, click the Personalize button on the top right.

  2. Click Fx89Personalize-GearIcon Manage more settings at the bottom of the panel.
  3. In New Windows and Tabs, select Blank Page from the New tabs drop-down menu.
