Microsoft Excel is no longer listed i Applications as download option. All files downloaded automatically are stored as Microsoft Word files, not just excel files. I can change individual files manually to .xlsx which is a nuisance, but this also happens with Zip files (7Zip) and I am at a loss as to how to change them when they are downloaded as a Word document.

This does not happen on a newer MacBook Pro, but I need it to work with the older version. The older Mac is MacBook Pro 9.2 with MacOS Catalina Version 10.15.7 Firefox is version 103.0

Thanks but I already looked at all of these. I regularly need to download work data that mainly arrive as excel or pdf files.

My problem is 1) all files are suddenly automatically downloaded by Firefox as Microsoft Word files, regardless if they are excel or pdf or jpg etc. and 2) in the Firefox content type list of Applications for downloads, Microsoft Excel is no longer listed, which means that I cannot choose Excel as the application to open a downloaded excel file. The only thing that enables me to open a downloaded excel or pdf file is to manually change the file ending to .xlsx or .pdf. This has started after the new download procedure was introduced, ie since the downloads are automatically stored and no longer require a click on the download arrow.

If there is a way to add Microsoft Excel as a content to the Applications that would be a first step. Ideally, files should really not change format/type when downloaded.
