How and why are websites over-riding my 'do NOT download images' setting?

I do not want images to automatically load. Among other reason, this is a dial-up connection. I unchecked the box in Tools > Options > Content. However, increasing number of websites now over-ride this setting: Amazon, Google, & even the Mozilla Firefox home page. It bogs down the whole system. Even with Ghostery running, the Firefox CPU usage shoots up to 97-100% and the whole show stops. I have to terminate Mozilla Firefox to get the system back. You folks on the Mozilla team are doing something to over-ride the setting. (I can do without the revolving pug dog and the dash line border. Wish I could shut it off). Obviously, other sites are following suit - most recently Amazon. [WinXP SP2, dial-up. I keep the system simple.] Why is this happening? How can I stop it?

Didn't work. Thanks for the suggestion, but Image Block 2.1 did not stop Amazon.com and http://news.google.com from displaying images. The FF (v. 15.0.1) browser's settings successfully prevent other websites from displaying images. These sites are doing something deliberate to circumvent the Mozilla Firefox options and the add-on. This is browser rape. How is Mozilla force-feeding the revolving pug-dog onto the home page? This may explain the how, but not the why.

Contacted Amazon.com. The Filipino rep. was going to open a ticket for this problem that he had 'never heard of before.' Instead, Amazon blew me off. Anyone have contacts at Amazon? Amazon won't trouble itself to tell me how or why it is over-riding the browser settings.

Subject: A Message from Amazon Customer Service This is Edward, the Amazon Customer Representative you spoke with earlier.

In addition to our large selection, one of the benefits we try very hard to offer our customers is convenience. I'm very sorry for the inconvenience you experienced in this case.

We've tried to escalate this issue but it look like we are not able to change any of our website feature. We advice you to contact your web browser provider and check what they can do to resolve this matter.
