New version will not allow Ctrl M to MARK a message as read. It opens a new message, as does Ctrl N. What happened. Please fix.

Brand new version 31.1.1 and previous 31.1.0 would not allow to mark a message as read using ctrl M. You must open the message or go to Message and scroll down to MARK and then mark as read. Now ctrl M opens a NEW message as does ctrl N. Redundant. Please FIX. Very inconvenient. Using TB since it was invented. Good program. Minor flaw.

I solved my own problem. NOW the keyboard control is fn and R, function and Read. Why in the world did someone see fit to make such a change?

I have never seen control m be the default for Mark as Read. There is not even a shortcut defined for that action in the default Thunderbird setup. Are you sure you did not define that shortcut yourself and somehow it got deleted in the upgrade. Here is the article on TB shortcuts and it shows both ctrl+n and ctrl+M as new message. This is how it works on version 24.6 that I am still using.

I am currently traveling and using my laptop. Upon arrive home in a few weeks, I will be happy to send you the version and a screen shot showing under MESSAGES and the MARK where the keyboard shortcut is CTRL M and it has been working as such for several years. Now I have answered my own question above, it is now FN R and works fine. And no, I have never created my own keyboard shortcut. I am not smart enough to do same. Please read my own posting, shortly after posting the question.
