I have gone through the steps listed at http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/make-firefox-remember-usernames-and-passwords?s=remembering+passwords&as=s and http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Username%20and%20password%20not%20remembered to no avail.

"Remember Passwords for Sites" has always been checked and there are no exceptions in the exceptions menu.

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
