Example of problem: Using Google: search for any term. Go down list, select, say, 9th item on list. Then, use back arrow to return to list. I should return to list at last item visited but instead FF brings me back to top of listings. It did not always do that but at some point it stopped bringing me back to last item and instead brings me back to top of listing of the search items.

Have you considered opening each search result in a new Tab, so that the original Google Search page you started with doesn't have to be reloaded every time you "go Back"?

You can Middle-click or use {Ctrl + Click} to have hyperlinks open in a new Tab. And when you are done with a page, just close the Tab.
