Every time I open Firefox after closing it, I get the message below. I can click the button to restore session and it works every time. With each update, I hope to never see this message again, but after installing a new version on Ubuntu today, I see the same familiar message. This is not linked to a computer, or an operating system because I've seen this on both Ubuntu and Mac. If Firefox could literally just click the button that would be awesome.

Sorry. We’re having trouble getting your pages back.

We are having trouble restoring your last browsing session. Select Restore Session to try again.

If the browser crashes twice in a row, it will display about:sessionrestore instead of automatically resuming the last session. You can change browser.sessionstore.max_resumed_crashes to -1 in about:config to always resume the last session.

Use one of these to close Firefox if you are currently doing that by clicking the close X on the Firefox Title bar, especially if you have multiple windows or Private Browsing windows open to prevent losing tabs in unnoticed windows.

  • "3-bar" menu button -> Exit (Power button)
  • Windows: File -> Exit
  • Mac: Firefox -> Quit Firefox
  • Linux: File -> Quit

I just set that setting so we will see how it works next time. I normally just click the X or shut down/restart the computer with Firefox open since I seem to always have it open anyway.

OK, setting browser.sessionstore.max_resumed_crashes to -1 does not really solve the issue for me.

Instead of getting the dialog offering a button to restore the last session, now Firefox simply starts with a single empty tab and I have to navigate with multiple clicks to restore the last session. :(

You can check "History -> Restore Previous Session" and "History -> Recently Closed Windows/Tabs".
