That Greeting is NOT Typical for ANY University, much less U of South Carolina. Immediately report this (WITH FULL HEADERS) via a FEW to oit@sc.edu (from the official page http://www.sc.edu/about/offices_and_divisions/division_of_information_technology/contact_us/index.php). If that is deemed by the staff there to be legitimate, please advise them to change the verbiage, so as to sound less like spam or a phishing attempt. Generally, these sorts of emails are made, use a template, which inserts your NAME OR School NetID so something like Dear John/Jane Doe, OR Dear JD12453, .......

It is a scam, ignore it. Thunderbird just downloads what is in your Inbox on your providers server. It has no control over what you receive. I am not sure what your expect to accomplish by finding someone to report it to. Spam is Spam. No one cares.
