When I start Firefox I get a menu box asking me to agree to let Firefox make changes to my computer. I click yes and the program opens and goes to my homepage. See Details below.

When I attempt to open Firefox from my desktop icon a menu box appears and backscreen grays out and I can't access anything else except this menu box. top of menu box says User Account Control. Next line says: Do you want to allow Firefox to make changes to this computer? I can click Yes (Firefox opens) No (menu box closes Firefox doesn't open) A link I can click says "change when these notifications appear" When I click it the menu box closes, Firefox doesn't open & link does not take me to where I can change my user account controls. Annoying, I just want Firefox to open directly to my home page like it did in prior versions.

Check that you do not run Firefox as Administrator.

Right-click the Firefox desktop shortcut and choose "Properties".
Make sure that all items are deselected in the "Compatibility" tab of the Properties window.

  • Privilege Level: "Run this program as Administrator" should not be selected
  • "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" should not be selected

Also check the Properties of the firefox.exe program in the Firefox program directory.

I changed the Property settings on the desktop shortcut as you directed. The properties in the exe program were aready uncheckd in compatibility. I then tried to start Firefox from the desktop shortcut, the pop up menu did not appear BUT Firefox now will not open from either theshortcut or the program .exe I ran troubleshoot compatibility and it again advised me to run Firefox in WindowsXP Service Pack Service Pack 2. I did not accept this setting but am still unable to open Firefox at all now. Thank you for your interest and suggestions but guess that won't be the solution.

Do a clean reinstall.

  • Uninstall your current Firefox version.
  • Do not remove personal data when you uninstall the current version or you lose your bookmarks and other data in the profile folder.
  • Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.
  • It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.

Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored elsewhere in the Firefox Profile Folder and won't be affected by a reinstall, but make sure that you do not select to remove personal data if you uninstall Firefox.

This is really weird. I did everything in the order you instructed but when clicked on the Desktop Firefox.exe A message popped up that said cannot open the file is corrupt. So then I rght clicked on it and ran troubleshoot compatiblity and looked at the findings it again said it had to run in Windows XP, Service pack 2. I manually changed the compatibility to Windows 7 in properties and tried to opn it again and still got message that the file is corrupt. Should I try to reinstall an earlier version? The last one I used a few months ago is still in my downloads, it is Version 6.0.1
