I was unable to update Firefox & suspect highjackers entered my Gmail account because of it.

My Gmail & Facebook accounts were highjacked between 3 and 4 a.m. on July 21, 2011. Both passwords were changed and I am unable to access either account. At present they continue to send phishing emails to some people in my address book. I set up an alternate email account at Yahoo but was locked out of it within hours. All this was done using Firefox. I have scanned my computer with Stopzilla, Avast, MalwareBytes and no files have been identified as corrupted. I was unable to load a recent Firefox update. Could Firefox be carrying this malware?

My initial thoughts are that someone has got hold of your email-passwords. Contact the sites affected and explain the problems.

You could of course have malware on your computer, which could be part of the reason for any compromised security. It may make sense to report the problems from a separate machine or by asking a friend you trust to make the initial reports.

I am not sure at the moment Firefox even list all security updates properly, updates always used to come with full details, now with the fast release cycle no additional info seems forthcoming for some of the updates.
