i am trying to download adobe player. The instruction is to hit the :edit options" button on firefox . I cannot find that button

The instructions on the Adobe site are outdated and do no longer apply to current Firefox versions and you can ignore those instructions and save the Adobe installer to your desktop and start the installation with a double-click on that file. See How do I edit options to add Adobe to the list of allowed sites

It means Tools->Options.
P.S. Tools or Edit, Options or Preferences, it's different on different operating systems. Adobe just didn't know that you use Windows XP.
