Login to server imap.telstra.com with my username just continuously fails. There must be a solution as it appears that I am not the only person experiencing the problem.

Fails when? With what error message? (verbatim please)
Have you tried without your antivirus scanning mail and encrypted connections? Norton in particular has been mentioned here repeatedly in recent weeks.
