When you open the Firefox for Android menu and select Settings, which search engine is listed under the word Search?
Where are you searching that leads to a Google search? Is it from the address bar in Firefox for Android?

Do you have Firefox for Android set as your default web browser on your Android device?
I noticed you used the phrase "news app". I assume you are talking about the Google Discover application (swipe right from The Home Screen) on a tablet. This app opens news in Chrome by default.
You can check which browser you are in by taking the following steps:
1. open the selected news item 2. tap the three vertical dots in the upper right corner (right before highlighting the word and doing a search) 3. make sure that "Running in Chrome" is not written in the last line of the menu
