How to stop messages saying "The folder 'folder_name' cannot be compacted because another operation is in progress. Please try again later."

Since updating to the latest version 68.5.0 on MacOS Catalina, I've been interrupted several times a day by a long series of error messages saying ""The folder 'folder_name' cannot be compacted because another operation is in progress. Please try again later." Each time I dismiss the error another pops up for a different folder and I end up having to dismiss around 20 pop-ups before I can check my email.

This problem used to happen occasionally on previous versions of Thunderbird (and MacOS) but never more than one or two pop-ups needed to be dismissed so it didn't bother me. Now the frequency and volume is on another level!

I've tried increasing the Compact Folders threshold up to 1GB so it compacts less frequently but this hasn't helped. I don't want to turn off automatic compacting because I understand its importance.

Is there a way to stop these messages from interrupting my workflow?

have a look in the activity manager and see if you can see another process happening. I am guessing it will be indexing. But to be sure would be good.

Is you mail store large? or individual folders? The larger folder becomes the more these sorts of errors are likely to appear because everything that happens on them takes longer.

It might be also that for some reason the global index file is a bit dodgy and needs to be deleted so it can be rebuilt. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/rebuilding-global-database#thunderbird:mac:tb68
