Why does "Get Messages" stall after "Connected..."?

(Using Thunderbird 31.3.0 in Win 8.1) Often when I'm in my Inbox and click the "Get Messages" button, I'll see in the info line at the bottom of the window "Connecting to..." and then "Connected to mail.comcast.net..." -- and then nothing happens. The message stays there for a minute or two, then disappears. No messages are downloaded, even when I know that there are some waiting. (When it's acting normally, it'll say how many messages were downloaded, or that there are no new messages.) At these times, it behaves the same way from my wife's Inbox, also. The internet is operating normally via Firefox at these times--and I can access my Comcast mailbox normally there. What's going on?

Usual cause is anti virus email scanning not working correctly. Try disabling it.
