Firefox auto-updated today (29.0.1), and completely changed my interface. I hate it. How can I get the last version back? What's the name of the last version? It's difficult to tell on the upload page.

Issue with Session History

Too late to help you now, and probably fixed for most users already. Unusually I had a problem a couple of times with session restore failing. I easily fixed it. I copied all the sessionstore related files, then removed sessionstore.js and replaced it with a renamed sessionstore.bak. As far as I could see I lost no information.

I have since noticed there was a bug fixed in the very recent Fx29.0.1 Release that most would get on Friday.

29.0 was very recent, preceded by 28.0

more options

Obviously 28 precedes 29.But being that I have version 29.0.1, is there a more specific version of 28 I need to download, like 28.0.9? On the FTP page, version 28 breaks down to a number of folders.

The previous stable version is 28.0 *final*.

To see the full update history for your client please navigate through the following: Tools > Options > Advanced > Update tab > Update History button

A window will popup and display your update history.

Take care if considering an unsupported old Firefox version

Please read this article, it does contain the links for downloading older versions

Be aware that once security fixes are made they are publicised and may be more likely to be exploited. Old versions increase the risk to your System and your Personal Information

I see update history how do I go back to 28?

For the future if you don't want your Firefox to update itself, click Tools > Options > Advanced > Updates > and change all the automatic settings.

Why do you not like Firefox29 ? and what specific problems do you have ?

@John99: Aside form the UI changes that rearranged my custom layout the update destroyed my session history. Not in just one profile either, it corrupted every session.js/.bak in all 3 of my profiles. After uninstalling 29 and reinstalling 28 I spent the bulk of my day sifting through my history and manually rebuilding 180+ tabs of session between 3 profiles.

I'm one of those crazy people that just want their stuff to work, I don't need flashy UI or sleek animations/effects popping from every pixel. That's why I use a blackberry, built my own rig, manage my own networks, and do almost everything else myself. I'm the only one I trust to get things done the way I like.

I can not give you a good explanation but I will comment nevertheless; in an attempt to clarify this mess.

At least that is the way development is heading with Firefox 29. Use addons for the bells and whistles.

Unexpected Disruptive Changes

One problem you encountered then was the unexpected changes. Maybe it would be worth commenting or at least voting in a thread that deals specifically with that. There is a possibility Mozilla staff may look at threads with high numbers of views and votes.

Personally I have seen quite a few forum comments where users are taken by surprise because of changes that are not expected, and not explained until after they have been made !

See and consider voting or commenting in for example

UI Changes
I presume these are the effects of F29 changes and whilst you did not expect this to ruin your customisations, Mozilla Firefox should be able to anticipate that as a likely consequence of an update and should be able to warn give users some sort of advance warning. Even if a tailored specific warning can not be given at least advice users in advance that the update will be occurring and its likely affects. That is just my personal opinion.

Setting to download but not install upgrades
This was one of the welcome changes in Firefox 29 . It is now much more logical in how it behaves. Previously you set it to not update, or not update without warning, looked at the about Firefox information and it promptly upgraded; regardless of the setting; if an upgrade was available. Fx29 respects the setting and downloads and upgrade but waits for you to decide to install the upgrade.

Session History
It is not as far as I know intended for an update to Firefox impact session History. If I have anything important as session History I may back up Session History profile files as a precaution, because I have previously run in to problems. making a copy of sessionstore.js should suffice, but it is worth backing up the whole profile occasionally it may help if you have a disaster.

Sync
Just a wild guess, but do you use Firefox Sync ?
That has changed somewhat with Fx29. Again without users being made aware in advance. It would have been very easy to trash Session History whilst dealing with that.

Firefox is a work in progress and your feedback is very important to us. Our support community is run by volunteers who work hard to help all Firefox users, but we can’t make changes to the design ourselves. Please help us improve Firefox by leaving feedback where the designers and engineers can see it: https://input.mozilla.org/en-US/feedback.

Personally I would add it if you go down that route make multiple short single topic comments, do not try to cover many points in one comment that just makes it hard to categorise when someone or software tries to analyse the feedback data. It is NOT a discussion forum. You can see the comments in this interactive page https://input.mozilla.org/en-US/
