Why don't the Back and forward arrows work?

Installed 5.0 and the forward and backward arrows (page forward/back one page) are either grayed out or do not do anything. Restarted ff in safe mode, same problem. So I backed it out and reinstalled 3.6.18 and everything works again. This is a catch 22 for me as you are not supporting the release I am running, but 5.0 is buggy to the point I cannot use it. Any suggestions?

A possible cause is a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.
