Did the homepage get reset to something when you updated? Otherwise, this is likely a router issue, since it's preventing internet access without logging in? Do other browsers work properly?

It was strange because it didnt prevent me from navigating away from the page. i was suspecting a security issue. I was able to get rid of the problem when i chose 'reset firefox' somewhere deep in the preferences. thanks for your help.
