How do I download the bookmarks to a file on my hard drive so I can back them up? I do this in IE but all I can find in Firefox is the Sync function that makes me upload my bookmarks to firefox.

Hi,

You can export the bookmarks to an HTML file via Bookmarks (Alt + B) > Show All Bookmarks > Import and Backup > Export Bookmarks to HTML which can be later used to Import Bookmarks from HTML.

You can also take a backup of the bookmarkbackups folder in the Firefox Profile Folder or the latest dated .json file inside. This folder or file can be copied or put back to Restore from the previous menu

Yet another way would be to backup the places.sqlite file which holds the history in addition to the bookmarks.
