Hello:

For a few months, I have seen that Thunderbird sometimes takes a long time to send emails. When I press the "send" button, in the bottom bar it says "Assembling the mail information ..." and it remains for about 40-50 seconds. Afterwards it sends the email but meanwhile Thunderbird freezes and nothing can be done. If I send several emails in a raw, this problem arises only when sending the first one.

I have Thunderbird 78.2.2 installed but the problem comes from version 68. When I installed TB78 I installed it from the very begining, uninstalling TB68 completely. I have tried starting Thunderbird with disabling all the add-ons but the problem persists. It does not matter if it is a new email or or if I am replaying to another one and it happens to me both when it has attachments and when it does not have any of them. I have a gmail account configured by IMAP and the operating system is Windows 7. I also tryed to disable the antivirus.

I would appreciate if someone could help me or could give me a clue. Thank you very much!!!

Chosen solution

It doesn't matter how long the antivirus program has been in use on your computer, because it is in active development and receives regular updates to its components, so the idea of it being the culprit is NOT so strange.

You could alternatively disable scanning of secure mail traffic (especially Outgoing) in your av program.

Restart Windows in safe mode with networking and see if it behaves the same.

Thanks for the answer Stans. There is not any problem when restarting Windows in safe mode with networking, so it seems that something interferes into Thunderbird. Is there any way to know which programs are interfering? Thanks for your help!!

Overzealous antivirus programs are a common culprit in such cases and sometimes simply disabling or pausing their real-time protection shields is just not enough. In Windows safe mode, the AV is not just paused, but completely not running because none of its components are loaded with Windows, unlike in normal mode whereby its components are still loaded and active in memory even if the protection is paused.

I suggest you completely uninstall the antivirus, preferably using its official uninstaller tool provided by its developer. You can install Microsoft Security Essentials as a fallback solution because it isn't wise to stay online without av protection, especially since you're running an unpatched and unsupported OS. Out of curiosity, why haven't you upgraded to Windows 10 yet? It's still free (unofficially).

Thanks for your answer. Actually, I have this problem in my work laptop and I am not allowed to upgrade to Windows 10 yet. The official email manager software that we should use is Outlook but I prefer to use Thunderbird. Due to that decisioin the IT service of my complany does not solve me this problem.

However, the antivirus software have been installed in my laptop for years, and I never had such a problem with Thunderbird.

Thanks again for your help.
